To argue we had one in France in barmy. It’s another country! You’d have to get transport both of which would be in high demand hence the prices would rocket. America is a huge place and it would take endless numbers of flights to travel to all the games. In England you can drive in a matter of hours.

Plus noone would go to the USA a it’s miles from every country apart from Canada and Mexico.

On the point that you bailed us out of WW2; You did not “bail us out of WW2″. You entered the war because Japan bombed Pearl Harbour. The US government leased the Allies arms and we paid for it. We didn’t have our own arms due to the fact we’d ben fighting for 3 years already (with no help from USa, despite pleas). After WW2 the European economy was in tatter but the US economy was booming because we had to buy everything from USA. When it looked like Hitler was going to take over the world you though “oops” and waded in.
As the British economy was ravaged by war in 1946 the US government lent us 6 billion dollars (not interest free) and we finally made the last payment in 2004.

Does that sound like a “bail out” to you? We bought our way out. As usual the US governemt chasing the dollar.

I cant believe it will be awarded to the US so soon after the 1994 attempt. Maybe they will keep doing it every few years until people pay attention to the globes biggest and best sport.

Canada, I believe, should host the 2018 WC and that’s really that. They’re having a trial run of sorts this summer with the U-20 WC and if that goes smoothly, which I think it will, they should be chosen for 2018. Why? Because they’ve never had one.

And just to keep YOU up to date, it’s called soccer where I’m from. We have a football; you may argue all you want about whether or not we should have called it that (and no, we shouldn’t have) but the fact remains that in this country, where I write from and come from, it’s called soccer.

Kansas City isn’t going to attract anyone unless they pony up the $400k a year in maximum league salary and get endorsement contracts. The point is that KC will indeed mortgage everything they own (which may not be as much as many clubs–I don’t remember if they have their own stadium) to get someone famous to put down fake roots in their city. But KC is surprisingly good at keeping sports franchises, so who knows what kind of leverage they have over the local population, though they’re they least attended MLS team. Still, don’t be amazed if the MLS finds itself paying players way too much for European has-beens in the near future. If Luis Figo is willing to go to Jeddah, I’m sure he’s willing to go to KC for the same amount of money.

I’m fascinated by Dubai: I’ve got the National Geographic episode and I’ve seen the Globetrekker show.

As for the big clubs at the bottom, I can’t imagine who should be there instead. Any suggestions? Madrid and Munich are both in the hunt for their respective league titles and Inter Milan looks to be running away with Serie A so they at least have to be on the list.

Sevilla, Werder Bremen and Lyon are good inclusions. Though I think Barca should be @ the top

What about Xabi Alonso’s goal against Newcastle? That was very impressive as well!

As for Bayern-Real, I think it’ll be good: Madrid have started playing a more open game as of late and I don’t think Bayern will really stop that from happening. I fully expect Robinho and Shweinsteiger to take over the wings and really open things up. I might be wrong, of course, since Bayern can sometimes play closed and boring (as can Madrid if they start Emerson and Diarra).

For some reason I expect Lyon-Roma to be great.

Real v Bayern sounds very dull, at least on paper.

About Pressley, or rather Hearts: They’re so fucked thanks to Romanov that it’s really no surprise their players want out. Despite some successes, Romanov is a blight on the sport and that is definitely not something I would want to deal with either.

Liga is certainly shaping up to be a very entertaining title race.

The only interesting bit of news to come out of Scotland this week was the Pressley news. I wonder, will he stay in Scotland (all arrows point to Dundee, I think) or will he transfer to a club in England? Only time will tell.

They’ll make it to the Champions League final too, unless they’re suddenly plagued with injuries.

Meanwhile, “Werder Bremen have confirmed that Miroslave Klose could leave the Bundesliga club at the end of the season.” Apparently Juventus have expressed an early interest in the German.

The Big Ten had a rough year. After Wisconsin there is a big drop off. The SEC is better. I like Arkansas a lot and think that when McFadden hurt himself in the first quarter the team suffered about as much as OSU would suffer if Troy Smith hurt himself. With a healthy McFadden and a smarter punt returner I think ARK wins the game. That said, the best non-BCS bowl game that I saw when scanning the list is Wisconsin-Arkansas. That should be a helluva game. A number of premier running backs, good defenses.

SEC was best top-to-bottom and that means a lot to me. Wisconsin sort of flew under my radar a little bit since I’m out here on the east coast and can’t watch as many midwest games (for instance I had an OSU game preempted on ABC by a BC game against som awful team — I forget who). Below the Badgers, though, who OSU didn’t play, there was a tremendous lack of depth in the Big 10. Iowa really bombed out and that surprised me in the first few weeks. Of course you know this, but I like to think that the conference play matters in the end. Florida played some great teams and beat a fantastic Arkansas team (which definitely didn’t show up against USC to start the year, though a 50-19 drubbing is still a 50-19 drubbing — I believe that was the score) as well as going one-loss to a bunch of teams that destroyed each other. Auburn is what, 9th? That’s pretty good. And while I don’t argue that Mich and Wisconsin are great teams, I stand by the fact that Florida deserves their spot under the current, flawed system we have in place.

It’ll never be as clear-cut as last year’s obvious USC v Texas championship game and there will never be another game like that for a long, long time, if ever. And I said this the day after last year’s game: that game killed any chance of getting a different system in the next 5 years because everyone will just say “but didn’t you see the USC-Texas game? The BCS works perfectly!”…

I’ve watched FLA barely beat enough teams to know that UM would beat them. FLA should have lost to SC a few weeks ago.

The whole “has to win the conference” argument is bunk. Just look at college basketball. Think if only one team from the ACC were allowed to play for the national title each year, or one team from the Big 12.

I’m in favor of a +1 system with the BCS. Top four teams (1-4, 2-3) play on new year’s day. Winners play on the 8th. If you aren’t good enough to finish in the BCS top four then you aren’t good enough to play for a national championship. Not once in as long as I can remember have there ever been FIVE teams with legitimate claims on a national title game berth. It’s usually two, sometimes there. Not sure if it’s ever been four. Will never be five. The talent pool is too shallow for there to be five teams in any one year. This makes much more sense and requires practically no change in the system.

Lena: The reason Reading is so good is Bobby Convey and the American never-say-die attitude. It helps us in sports, anyway. Gilberto Silva is one of those guys who does more than you think (ala Carrick, if you’d like an EPL example, Iniesta for La Liga) and I also believe he’s a big influence “in the locker room” aka on the field where it matters.

Gabriel Heinze is way overrated, in my opinion. I’ve yet to see him put in a more than decent performance at any level, regardless of how highly anyone rates him. I don’t buy him as a world-class talent.

Sinama-Pongolle is great. He should get more chances to prove himself at a larger club.

Also, I too rate Gilberto Silva. A friend of mine (who is a Liverpool and Roma) supporter thinks he’s garbage– which is absolutely ridiculous.

A couple decent South American players in the Premiership: Gabriel Heinze and Nolberto Solano.

I’ve been following the results of Recreativo Huelva because I highly rate Sinama-Pongolle. He’s a fantastic young talent.
