I would only like a World Cup in England if there where games played in my Home town of Portsmouth

USA had there World Cup in 94. 2018 Would be to soon.

So I would Like to see CANADA host it. If not on its own, then a joint effort with USA

Cities that should host a game

Toronto
Montreal
NY
LA
Houston

Put they would need to expand there soccer stadiums if they don't want to take up the lines and art work on NFL fields.

We do not deserve one however I think it' high time we had one. The English stadiums are arguably the best in the world, have pretty much eradicated the hooligan problem and we haven't had one for over 40 years.

To argue we had one in France in barmy. It's another country! You'd have to get transport both of which would be in high demand hence the prices would rocket. America is a huge place and it would take endless numbers of flights to travel to all the games. In England you can drive in a matter of hours.

Plus noone would go to the USA a it's miles from every country apart from Canada and Mexico.

On the point that you bailed us out of WW2; You did not "bail us out of WW2". You entered the war because Japan bombed Pearl Harbour. The US government leased the Allies arms and we paid for it. We didn't have our own arms due to the fact we'd ben fighting for 3 years already (with no help from USa, despite pleas). After WW2 the European economy was in tatter but the US economy was booming because we had to buy everything from USA. When it looked like Hitler was going to take over the world you though "oops" and waded in.
As the British economy was ravaged by war in 1946 the US government lent us 6 billion dollars (not interest free) and we finally made the last payment in 2004.

Does that sound like a "bail out" to you? We bought our way out. As usual the US governemt chasing the dollar.

Hmmmm. This piece was obviously written by a very educated person...... LOL.
2 big reason why England deserves the world cup. 1 Football is an English sport 2 we haven't hosted the world cup since 1966.
I understand people like the idea of moving continents but seriously Europe has the best footballing infrastructure and footballing nations, this is the reason why it has hosted the most tournaments.
America had it in 94 when only the european expats new what the game was! And on that occasion you tried to make the goal bigger, add time outs and istead of 2 halfs wanted to make it 4 quarters. Hmmmmm.
I think the superbowl should be played in Russioa next year??

Whoever wrote this is a complete idiot! Straight away in the opening sentence you can see how narrow minded a person he/she is.
The language is called english for a reason, if it came from america it would be called american. How can you say that anyway? All Americans (apart from natives) are migrants from European countries mostly from England (which is why english is the language there). So you lot are all decendants from us and other European countries!

So why should 500 miles to Canada be any more deserving to 500 miles in Europe. There is a reason for the cycle of WC finals around the continents biasing Europe or South America. thats where the decent countries play.

Oh and the governing body is FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) not FISA. Hence not Soccer.

If you want to play your own world championship why not do it like Baseball.

Better also get to be a student of history. You might have finally decided to get your arses over into Europe in WW2 but it was only because of your own stinking self-interest. Think you might have had a capital city after the Nazi's had nuked the shit out of Washington? At least we stuck around, took the bombings and gave you lazy bastards somewhere to land, so you could save your own arses. Oh and we paid you shit loads of cash, to save your president from glowing in the dark - so we owe you nothing.

It pretty amusing that nowadays you're more than ready to stick your noses into ever other country in the name of 'freedom'.

You're wrong mostly. You deserve all the insults so far, and more. English is our language, otherwise it wouldn't be called ENGLISH. It would be called American. Your language is American English.
Yeah, we invented our football and we haven't been proven the best at it for... what is it, 42 years? Ah well, hopefully we'll get lucky some when in the next century.

And besides, most of America wasn't English when it was founded. So does it really matter? Some of it was French, and I think we can all agree the French are gay.

Again, I think it's got to be given to Canada; I'd love to see it in Central America, but I just don't think FIFA will ever believe they have the money to make it. Mexico has had it twice already in recent enough memory, but there's certainly no reason that England deserves the WC over the US. Yeah, it's only been 13 years, but again, Europe had one less than one year ago and while that's not England and it is a trip, it's a lot closer than, say, an American traveling to England.

Personally, the more variety of countries that host the World Cup the better in my eyes. There are still some great candidates in my eyes including Australia (although it will be Autumn\Winter time come July),

I cant believe it will be awarded to the US so soon after the 1994 attempt. Maybe they will keep doing it every few years until people pay attention to the globes biggest and best sport.

Hmm. England is in Europe. Honest! And 500 miles is not very far for a World Cup, even if it is in another country. I'd gladly travel ONLY 500 miles to get to a World Cup. And saying it's in another country hardly makes a difference since I'm arguing about having it in a CONCACAF nation, not specifically the United States. Mexico, for instance, would be a perfectly acceptable place, in my eyes. Maybe all of Central America can make a bid and get it. That'd be fine with me (though their abilities to provide world class stadiums might be subpar). The point is that England and Europe (UEFA, really) just had a World Cup and if it's a global game, let it be global, not oriented around Europe just because they have the most money with which to create the best domestic leagues.

Canada, I believe, should host the 2018 WC and that's really that. They're having a trial run of sorts this summer with the U-20 WC and if that goes smoothly, which I think it will, they should be chosen for 2018. Why? Because they've never had one.

And just to keep YOU up to date, it's called soccer where I'm from. We have a football; you may argue all you want about whether or not we should have called it that (and no, we shouldn't have) but the fact remains that in this country, where I write from and come from, it's called soccer.

Thanks for you input about 1966. Now if only you could win another one...hmmm...of course, we've never won one, but we're working on it!

Exactly. I'm not sure if Capello plays a style that works for Ronaldo, but still, to act as if he's not a good striker is silly. Sure, he's not the same as he used to be, but he's still world class. Milan, at least, recognize that, though they're striker-happy as it is.

Now to the Sevilla-Atletico game!

The FSC British commentators are OK. There's this one guy though-- Jon Champion-- who is a bit ridiculous. He continually says, 'Barclays English Premiership' throughout the game. Viewers know the name of the damn league already, how many times does he have to remind us?

As it was my first experience with Ray Hudson (I trust you are correct as to his name), I only know that he's very expressive in terms of his love of Madrid. I actually wish I'd seen it in Spanish because I've found that the Mexican league commentators are actually very good (relatively speaking since they still say inane shit now and then) and generally stick to the game itself. American commentators are terrible (ex: Joe Buck, Dick Vitale, John Madden) because they tend to talk about the players' lives rather than what is happening on the field. Occasionally there are a few lines about strategy that are pretty good, but it's so rare that it's like it never happens. Sometimes I just watch with it muted.

Tommy Smyth and Derek Rae come to mind as the best English language soccer commentators I know and that is soooo sad. I don't get FSC so I don't know if the British guys are better.

I'm in total agreement about the commentators: the American commentator, in particularly, sounds as though he has been a sportscaster for baseball or something. His approach is VERY American.

Now, in terms of the English gent, Ray Hudson. He's not so bad. In fact, I've found that when he's commentating on a Barcelona game, he's VERY biased. I've thought the same when it's a Real Zaragoza game.

I agree with you. I'm not a fan of Ronaldo, but I think the change will do him good. I'll certainly keep an eye out when he starts playing for them.

As it should be -- I meant to update this with a thought on it about the fact that I agree with Adam Spangler of This is American Soccer that it's not actually very well written and could have been so much better. It's obvious there was a ton there and I was imagining for the first page or so that it would read like a National Geographic article, but it didn't, which is really a shame since I know there was fodder there for so much more. Obviously I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for me.

I would tend to agree and even beyond that, we're talking about someone who is moving to another club where he will get playing time -- a very important factor. Best of both worlds, really.

I don't know if he was promised a first team position at Anfield but most fans who call him greedy don't seem to understand that the playing careers of footballers is rather short . It's only from the age of say 25-30 when you are really at your peak and can expect maximum salary.

And not everybody makes as much money as the Henry and Lampard!

I too think it's a little over-the-top, especially since attacking shouldn't have been the priority, but there is still time left in the window for defenders to be brought in. Time will tell if Young is the right man for the job, especially with Luke Moore returning.

don't know how the deal is going to work out. But if you are living in the U.S. you can be assured that any Beckham freekick will get a lot of airtime on ESPN etc etc. And will the Americans take to Beckham? Will Posh pose nude for playboy? Lot of questions!

You might be right: I did, however, feel that he felt that the board wasn't bettering the situation at the club by limiting his spending. Honestly, if he's a a good manager (like I think he is, although I question some of his decisions), he should figure a way around this-- especially in terms of finding a solution in the backline.

There was a special on 20/20 (I think) about Dubai, but on the living and working conditions of the laborers. That was interesting too.

In terms of Beckham, his move might lead more aging players to the US (as opposed to Saudi Arabia). Time will tell.

I'm not sure Mourinho wants you to feel sorry for him, he's just really into these intense and ridiculous mind games with everyone in England. I mean, really, his "allowance" as you called it is still bigger than basically anyone's on earth (the only exception I can think of would be Real Madrid).

Dubai is amazing in that it was once an empty stretch of coastal desert and that was like 1980. And now it's a thriving metropolis of a couple million. Ridiculous. Also, hummingbirds totally rule if you read the rest of that NG issue.

Kansas City isn't going to attract anyone unless they pony up the $400k a year in maximum league salary and get endorsement contracts. The point is that KC will indeed mortgage everything they own (which may not be as much as many clubs--I don't remember if they have their own stadium) to get someone famous to put down fake roots in their city. But KC is surprisingly good at keeping sports franchises, so who knows what kind of leverage they have over the local population, though they're they least attended MLS team. Still, don't be amazed if the MLS finds itself paying players way too much for European has-beens in the near future. If Luis Figo is willing to go to Jeddah, I'm sure he's willing to go to KC for the same amount of money.

I just can't feel sorry for Mourinho. 'Woe is me! They cut my allowance!'

I'm fascinated by Dubai: I've got the National Geographic episode and I've seen the Globetrekker show.

Would aging world class players be attracted to a place such as Kansas City?

The rankings are more based on their current form than their potential. Barcelona, with Eto'o and Messi healthy is probably the best team in the world, but neither of them are playing so I can't in good faith put Barcelona top. I am a Barcelona fan and a Chelsea hater, but I don't really think that Barca is better than Chelsea right now. We'll see, of course, later in the year if they can't rebound from what has been a mediocre performance in European competition (or at least mediocre for Barca).

As for the big clubs at the bottom, I can't imagine who should be there instead. Any suggestions? Madrid and Munich are both in the hunt for their respective league titles and Inter Milan looks to be running away with Serie A so they at least have to be on the list.

You have placed three big clubs at the bottom end of the list.
I think Barca are better than Chelsea any day. Not as a Chelsea hater or a Barcelona supporter, but as a neutral

Sevilla, Werder Bremen and Lyon are good inclusions. Though I think Barca should be @ the top

They're too good to make the top 10. It's like if MJ played in a rec league. You just have to say "best players who aren't MJ"...think of it that way.

I think that ManU - Lille will be the dullest of them all simply because Lille is easily the worst team in final 16. While I'll be rooting for them, I'm sure they'll lose big in the return leg at Old Trafford, regardless of what happens in France.

As for Bayern-Real, I think it'll be good: Madrid have started playing a more open game as of late and I don't think Bayern will really stop that from happening. I fully expect Robinho and Shweinsteiger to take over the wings and really open things up. I might be wrong, of course, since Bayern can sometimes play closed and boring (as can Madrid if they start Emerson and Diarra).

For some reason I expect Lyon-Roma to be great.

Liverpool v Barcelona is definitely the most interesting. Lille v ManU-- who knows what'll happen with that one. ManU have slipped on a few bananas in the past...

Real v Bayern sounds very dull, at least on paper.

Mathew Taylor's strike was just too brilliant. Essien' strike is no match to Taylor's. In fact, as of now, Taylor's goal should be the goal of the season.

Let's not act like Kazakhstan is so backwards as to not have a professional football league! In fact, the Kazakhstan Super League is 4 years older than the MLS.

About Pressley, or rather Hearts: They're so fucked thanks to Romanov that it's really no surprise their players want out. Despite some successes, Romanov is a blight on the sport and that is definitely not something I would want to deal with either.

Hah-- does Kazakhstan even have a domestic league?!

Liga is certainly shaping up to be a very entertaining title race.

The only interesting bit of news to come out of Scotland this week was the Pressley news. I wonder, will he stay in Scotland (all arrows point to Dundee, I think) or will he transfer to a club in England? Only time will tell.

I wonder how good they really are. Their domestic competition is obviously weak enough that it might prove a detriment to their abilities in Europe, but we'll have to wait and see. I've been unable to watch many of their games, but I caught a few and they looked amazing both in Europe and domestically. Perhaps they can make a run for it, but a lot depends on the draw.

I agree- Cannavaro did not deserve the Ballon d'Or. He had a great World Cup-- but that's about it. And I don't think that Thierry Henry deserved it either. So, yes, I believe it should've been awarded to Ronaldinho.

Meanwhile, "Werder Bremen have confirmed that Miroslave Klose could leave the Bundesliga club at the end of the season." Apparently Juventus have expressed an early interest in the German.

The best thing for the BCS would have been if FLA somehow didn't earn a championship game berth tonight, but UM not earning a berth is almost as good. Mistake me if I'm wrong, the but the head of the BCS is an SEC guy. Had his team not made it...well. Things might be different. But if FLA manages to beat OSU and UM beats USC soundly, then I wouldn't be surprised if there were a split national championship. If that were the case everyone might throw their hands in the air and adopt a new system, or at least an altered one.

The Big Ten had a rough year. After Wisconsin there is a big drop off. The SEC is better. I like Arkansas a lot and think that when McFadden hurt himself in the first quarter the team suffered about as much as OSU would suffer if Troy Smith hurt himself. With a healthy McFadden and a smarter punt returner I think ARK wins the game. That said, the best non-BCS bowl game that I saw when scanning the list is Wisconsin-Arkansas. That should be a helluva game. A number of premier running backs, good defenses.

I definitely agree with a +1 system. My biggest grievance with the BCS is how heavily the computers weight the PAC-10. USC wasn't even close to as good as either Michigan or Florida but they were right up there with them and had they beaten UCLA, the Trojans would have been in the title. So certainly I'd like to see a +1 system used at least for a couple of years to see if it works. I'm sure it would. And do you think the teams would mind playing an extra huge-money game?

SEC was best top-to-bottom and that means a lot to me. Wisconsin sort of flew under my radar a little bit since I'm out here on the east coast and can't watch as many midwest games (for instance I had an OSU game preempted on ABC by a BC game against som awful team -- I forget who). Below the Badgers, though, who OSU didn't play, there was a tremendous lack of depth in the Big 10. Iowa really bombed out and that surprised me in the first few weeks. Of course you know this, but I like to think that the conference play matters in the end. Florida played some great teams and beat a fantastic Arkansas team (which definitely didn't show up against USC to start the year, though a 50-19 drubbing is still a 50-19 drubbing -- I believe that was the score) as well as going one-loss to a bunch of teams that destroyed each other. Auburn is what, 9th? That's pretty good. And while I don't argue that Mich and Wisconsin are great teams, I stand by the fact that Florida deserves their spot under the current, flawed system we have in place.

It'll never be as clear-cut as last year's obvious USC v Texas championship game and there will never be another game like that for a long, long time, if ever. And I said this the day after last year's game: that game killed any chance of getting a different system in the next 5 years because everyone will just say "but didn't you see the USC-Texas game? The BCS works perfectly!"...

The SEC is the best from top to bottom, but the Big Ten is the best at the top. OSU, UM, and Wisconsin are all finishing the season in the top seven of the BCS, and Wisconsin is ranked 5, 5, 6 in the human polls. UM played and beat Wisconsin and lost to OSU by three on the road. FLA lost to Auburn by 10. Which loss is more impressive?

I've watched FLA barely beat enough teams to know that UM would beat them. FLA should have lost to SC a few weeks ago.

The whole "has to win the conference" argument is bunk. Just look at college basketball. Think if only one team from the ACC were allowed to play for the national title each year, or one team from the Big 12.

I'm in favor of a +1 system with the BCS. Top four teams (1-4, 2-3) play on new year's day. Winners play on the 8th. If you aren't good enough to finish in the BCS top four then you aren't good enough to play for a national championship. Not once in as long as I can remember have there ever been FIVE teams with legitimate claims on a national title game berth. It's usually two, sometimes there. Not sure if it's ever been four. Will never be five. The talent pool is too shallow for there to be five teams in any one year. This makes much more sense and requires practically no change in the system.

Disappointment Zone: I see your point about whether it's about the best team or the most deserving, but I rate the SEC this year as the best football conference I've ever seen (that's not saying much -- me paying attention to college football goes back to about 2001) and so the winner of that conference certainly deserves a shot at the title. But isn't this exactly why the BCS is terrible?

Lena: The reason Reading is so good is Bobby Convey and the American never-say-die attitude. It helps us in sports, anyway. Gilberto Silva is one of those guys who does more than you think (ala Carrick, if you'd like an EPL example, Iniesta for La Liga) and I also believe he's a big influence "in the locker room" aka on the field where it matters.

Gabriel Heinze is way overrated, in my opinion. I've yet to see him put in a more than decent performance at any level, regardless of how highly anyone rates him. I don't buy him as a world-class talent.

Sinama-Pongolle is great. He should get more chances to prove himself at a larger club.

Gabriel Heinze is way overrated, in my opinion. I’ve yet to see him put in a more than decent performance at any level, regardless of how highly anyone rates him. I don’t buy him as a world-class talent.

Sinama-Pongolle is great. He should get more chances to prove himself at a larger club.

I must say that I'm very impressed with Cotterill's Reading squad. They've adjusted very well to the Premiership. I also like their non-defeatist attitude.

Also, I too rate Gilberto Silva. A friend of mine (who is a Liverpool and Roma) supporter thinks he's garbage-- which is absolutely ridiculous.

A couple decent South American players in the Premiership: Gabriel Heinze and Nolberto Solano.

I've been following the results of Recreativo Huelva because I highly rate Sinama-Pongolle. He's a fantastic young talent.

No, the title game is going to be very bad. Florida deserved it more than Michigan (I guess) but Michigan is the better team. If the aim the BCS is to pit the two most deserving teams then FLA is the correct choice. If it's to pit the two best teams, then Michigan should have been the choice. I dont' know what the early point spread is going to be, but take OSU. Not only is Tressel arguable the best coach in terms of designing a game plan, but a) the team had one of the best scoring defenses in the country, b) one of the best offenses in the country, c) the best player in the country and d) yesterday was the first time FLA scored 30 points in a game. That's an incredible stat. FLA's offense is shaky. OSU's defense is really good. FLA's defense is not that good (too many injuries). OSU's offense is really good. OSU +17 is a bet I'd take (the spread will be about 9 is my guess).

I'm unfamiliar with Barcelona stuff right now, but is this rotation a new thing? Did he adopt this system after Eto'o's injury?

Larsson won't go back-- at least I don't think so-- even if only on loan.

yea but no big name wants to go to Barca, becassue they know that after the injured players are back they will see the bench, or at least will be a fringe player ... thats why they are going for larson .. plus riajark is a moron, hes adopted this rotating system and no one likes it, players wanna go there and start, not play one game and not the next

Adding Saviola to the injury list is definitely another blow. It's getting out of hand, really. Ezquerro is going to have to step up and it's almost as if they shouldn't have sold Maxi Lopez (who could have seen that statement coming!?)
